Fire-throated Metaltail

The Fire-throated Metaltail (Metallura eupogon) is a hummingbird species endemic to the humid forest edges and scrublands of the high Andes in central Peru. First described by ornithologist Jean Cabanis in 1874, it belongs to the Metaltail genus, a group distinguished by their iridescent plumage and deeply notched, metallic-looking tails. Its evolutionary history is deeply tied to the extreme altitudinal gradients of the eastern Andean slopes, where it has developed a specialized niche among high-elevation flowering shrubs.

The species is noted for its distinctive, fiery-red throat patch, which provides a vivid contrast against its otherwise dark, dusky-green plumage. Like other members of its genus, the Fire-throated Metaltail features pointed wings adapted for agile flight in the thin, cool air of its alpine environment. The design of the bird's tail, characterized by its notched, fork-like structure, serves both as a diagnostic feature for identification and as a functional tool for precise maneuvering while foraging for nectar in the dense, windswept vegetation of its native habitat.
