Dark-breasted Rosefinch

The Dark-breasted Rosefinch (Procarduelis nipalensis) was formally described by Brian Houghton Hodgson in 1836. Belonging to the finch family, this species is native to the high-altitude forests and scrublands of the Himalayas, ranging from Northern India and Nepal through to parts of China. Its classification emerged from the extensive ornithological expeditions of the 19th century, which sought to document the diverse avian life inhabiting the elevations of the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding mountain ranges.

The bird is characterized by its distinct physical adaptations to cold, rugged environments, featuring broad wings and a notched tail that assist in agile navigation through dense, mountainous terrain. Unlike some of its more brightly colored relatives, the Dark-breasted Rosefinch displays a more muted, dusky plumage, an evolutionary development that provides essential camouflage against the rocky, shadowed slopes of its alpine habitat. It remains a subject of ongoing study for researchers focused on the evolutionary history of Himalayan passerines.
