Deep-blue Flowerpiercer

The Deep-blue Flowerpiercer, Diglossa glauca, is a species of tanager found in the humid montane forests of the northern Andes. Named for its specialized feeding behavior, the bird uses its unique, upward-curved bill to pierce the bases of flowers, allowing it to access nectar in a process known as nectar robbing. This evolutionary adaptation is a hallmark of the genus Diglossa, which has evolved to exploit floral resources that are otherwise inaccessible to many other avian species.

First described in the mid-19th century, the species is categorized by its distinct deep-blue plumage and pointed, agile wings that facilitate rapid movement through dense canopy foliage. The notched tail serves as a mechanical stabilizer during its hover-like flight patterns.
