Dickinson's Kestrel

Dickinson's Kestrel, scientifically classified as Falco dickinsoni, derives its common name from the English physician and missionary John Dickinson. It was first described in the mid-19th century following specimens collected in the Shire Valley of present-day Malawi. The bird belongs to the falcon family and is native to the savanna and woodland regions of southern and eastern Africa, typically associated with palm groves where it nests.

The species is distinguished by its subtle, slate-grey plumage and a notably dark, almost black appearance compared to other small falcons. It possesses a characteristic pointed wing shape optimized for agile, energy-efficient flight while foraging for insects, lizards, and small rodents. Its tail is frequently observed as slightly rounded or squared, though its silhouette in flight often displays a unique, stiff-winged character that separates it from the more acrobatic kestrels of the northern hemisphere.
