Dimorphic Dwarf-Kingfisher

The Dimorphic Dwarf-Kingfisher, Ceyx margarethae, is a species endemic to the southern Philippines, notably found in the Sulu Archipelago and Mindanao. It was historically considered a subspecies of the Rufous-backed Dwarf-Kingfisher, but taxonomic revisions have established it as a distinct species based on its unique morphology and geographical isolation. The bird serves as a representative of the specialized, forest-dwelling kingfishers of Southeast Asia, thriving in the dense, humid undergrowth of lowland tropical forests.

The species is named in honor of Margaret Guillemard, the wife of the naturalist F.H.H. Guillemard, who conducted significant biological expeditions in the region during the late 19th century. Its design, if one may speak of natural evolution, features a compact, rounded wing shape and a notably short tail, traits evolved to navigate the cluttered, light-starved environments of the forest floor with precision. Ornithologists appreciate the bird for its vibrant plumage and its resilience in habitats that are increasingly fragmented by environmental pressures.
