Dubois's Seedeater

Dubois's seedeater, or Sporophila ardesiaca, is a species of bird in the tanager family, Thraupidae. First described by the German ornithologist Carl Eduard Hellmayr in 1904, the species was historically named in honor of the Belgian ornithologist Alphonse Dubois. It is endemic to the Cerrado region of central and eastern Brazil, where it occupies brushy habitats, gallery forest edges, and secondary growth. The bird's identification as a distinct species has historically been a subject of taxonomic discussion, as it is closely related to other members of the genus Sporophila, often referred to as 'capuchinos' due to their distinctive vocalizations and patterns.

The physical design of the species is defined by its subtle, muted plumage, which aids in concealment within its dry, scrubby environment. Characterized by a rounded wing shape and a distinctly notched tail, these anatomical features are evolutionary adaptations for short, agile flights between shrubbery rather than sustained long-distance migration. While the species is not subject to a design history in the traditional sense, its classification represents the culmination of 20th-century field ornithology efforts to catalog the biodiversity of the Brazilian highlands, emphasizing the morphological precision required to differentiate these morphologically similar seedeaters.
