Dusky Flycatcher

The Dusky Flycatcher, Empidonax oberholseri, was formally described by ornithologist Allan R. Phillips in 1939. Named in honor of the biologist Harry C. Oberholser, the species was historically confused with other members of the difficult-to-distinguish Empidonax genus, often referred to by field ornithologists as the 'empid' flycatchers. It is native to the western regions of North America, where it occupies brushy habitats and montane forests, relying on its distinct vocalizations and subtle anatomical markers, such as its rounded wing shape and slightly notched tail, to maintain its biological niche.

The taxonomy of the species emerged from a period of intense avian classification during the early twentieth century, when researchers focused on identifying cryptic species through anatomical measurements rather than plumage alone. Because the Dusky Flycatcher displays few external field marks to distinguish it from the Gray or Hammond's flycatcher, it remains a subject of study for enthusiasts who prize the challenge of acoustic identification.
