Dusky-faced Tanager

The Dusky-faced Tanager, scientifically known as Mitrospingus cassinii, is a member of the Mitrospingidae family native to the humid forests and shrubby areas of Central and South America, particularly in regions spanning from Costa Rica to northwestern Ecuador. It was first described by the American ornithologist George Newbold Lawrence in 1861, who named the species in honor of his colleague John Cassin. The bird is distinguished by its slate-gray face, olive-yellow body, and unique rounded wing and tail shapes, which facilitate agile movement through dense, tangled vegetation.

These birds typically inhabit the middle and lower strata of humid lowland forests, often moving in active, noisy social groups. Their social structure and distinct vocalizations have been subjects of study for neotropical ornithologists interested in the evolutionary adaptations of tanager-like birds. While not as iconic as some of their more brightly colored relatives, the Dusky-faced Tanager serves as an important indicator species for the health of the specific riparian and scrub habitats they occupy throughout their geographic range.
