Eared Quetzal

The Eared Quetzal, known scientifically as Euptilotis neoxenus, is a rare member of the trogon family primarily found in the high-elevation pine-oak forests of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. It is a relict species, representing an ancient lineage of quetzals that became isolated from their Central American cousins as habitats shifted during past climatic changes. The bird is characterized by its iridescent green plumage, broad wings, and a distinctively long, graduated tail, alongside the unique crest of elongated feathers that gives the species its common name.

First described by ornithologist John Gould in 1838, the Eared Quetzal has long been a subject of fascination due to its elusive nature and restricted range. The species was once thought to be limited strictly to Mexico, though occasional, sporadic sightings have occurred in the sky islands of southeastern Arizona. Because of its quiet behavior and preference for dense canopy cover, it was historically difficult to document, leading to its reputation among ornithologists as one of the most enigmatic avian subjects in North America.
