East Brazilian Chachalaca

The East Brazilian Chachalaca, known scientifically as Ortalis araucuan, is an arboreal game bird endemic to the Atlantic Forest regions of eastern Brazil. It belongs to the Cracidae family, a group of birds that evolved in the Neotropics and are characterized by their social, ground-dwelling, and arboreal habits. As a species restricted to specific coastal lowland habitats, its history is deeply tied to the conservation efforts surrounding Brazil's fragmented forests, as its populations have faced ongoing pressure from habitat loss.

Taxonomically, the bird is distinguished by its rounded wings and square tail, features that reflect its adaptation for short, maneuvering flights through dense foliage rather than sustained long-distance migration. It was formally described in the context of nineteenth-century ornithological surveys of South American biodiversity. Its design, in an evolutionary sense, favors a cryptic, brownish-grey plumage that allows it to blend into the canopy, a trait that has historically made these birds more often heard through their loud, raucous vocalizations than seen by researchers.
