Eastern Parotia

The Eastern Parotia, or Parotia helenae, is a bird of paradise native to the montane forests of southeastern Papua New Guinea. First described by Charles Walter De Vis in 1897, it was historically categorized as a subspecies of the Western Parotia, though modern ornithological taxonomy now largely recognizes it as a distinct species based on its unique plumage and distinct behavioral displays. Its existence came to broader scientific attention during the height of late 19th-century European interest in the biodiversity of New Guinea, a period marked by intense exploration and the subsequent cataloging of the region's diverse avian life.

The bird is renowned for its elaborate courtship display, which involves a highly ritualized dance and the use of metallic, ornamental feathers to attract mates. The species is characterized by its rounded wing shape and fanned tail, physical attributes that facilitate its complex aerial maneuvers within the dense forest canopy. The design of these traits, evolved over millennia, serves as a primary driver for mate selection, with the males showcasing iridescent throat patches and specialized head plumes to impress females during their displays.
