Splendid Astrapia

The Splendid Astrapia, Astrapia splendidissima, was first described by the ornithologist Adolf Bernhard Meyer in 1895. Found primarily in the central highlands of New Guinea, the species is a member of the Paradisaeidae family, famously characterized by the evolutionary pressure for elaborate displays that favor dramatic plumage. Its discovery occurred during the late nineteenth-century period of intense European exploration into the interior of New Guinea, where naturalists sought to catalog the unique biodiversity of the island's cloud forests.

The design of the bird's aesthetic is defined by its striking iridescence and distinctively broad, rounded wings paired with a long, pointed, graduated tail. In its natural environment, the species relies on these features to perform complex mating displays in the dense canopy. Taxonomically, it is classified among the birds-of-paradise, a group that has long been recognized for the extreme sexual dimorphism and morphological specialization that arise from centuries of isolated evolution in high-altitude montane habitats.
