Fiery-shouldered Parakeet

The Fiery-shouldered Parakeet, scientifically classified as Pyrrhura egregia, is endemic to the remote tepuis of the Pantepui region, primarily spanning the border areas of Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil. It was formally described in 1881 by the ornithologist Philip Sclater. As a member of the diverse Pyrrhura genus, it evolved in isolated, high-altitude montane forests, developing physical adaptations such as broad wings and a characteristically pointed, slender tail that aid in navigating dense, rugged cloud forest canopies.

The species is noted by naturalists for its distinct plumage, particularly the vibrant patches on its shoulders and wings from which it derives its common name. Historically, its discovery came during the mid-to-late 19th-century scientific expeditions to the Guiana Highlands, a period of intense interest in cataloging the unique biodiversity of South America's isolated tabletop mountains. It remains a subject of study for evolutionary biologists interested in how the unique topography of the tepuis influenced the speciation of these resilient birds.
