Where it came from
The Floreana Mockingbird, Mimus trifasciatus, is a rare avian species endemic to the Galapagos Islands. It was first collected during the 1835 voyage of the HMS Beagle, where Charles Darwin observed distinct variations in mockingbirds across the archipelago. These observations became fundamental to the development of his theory of natural selection, as the slight morphological differences between island populations suggested a common ancestor that had diverged over time.
Physically, the species is defined by its rounded wing shape and distinctively notched tail, adaptations that suit its terrestrial, shrub-dwelling lifestyle in the dry scrublands of the Galapagos. Once widespread on Floreana Island, the species was extirpated from its primary habitat by the introduction of invasive predators like rats and feral cats. Today, the remaining population is strictly confined to two small satellite islets, Champion and Gardner-by-Floreana, making it one of the rarest and most strictly monitored birds in the world.
