Flores Green-Pigeon

The Flores Green-Pigeon (Treron floris) is a bird species endemic to the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. It was first described in the scientific record in 1894 by Ernst Hartert, a prominent ornithologist and curator who worked extensively with the Rothschild collection. The species occupies a niche within the humid lowland forests and scrublands of the region, and its classification reflects the intense period of biological exploration in the Indonesian archipelago during the late nineteenth century.

The species is characterized by its distinct sexual dimorphism, with males exhibiting a subtle pinkish-mauve shoulder patch against a predominantly green plumage. Its physiological design—notably the rounded wings and square tail—is an evolutionary adaptation to the island's specific forest canopy environment. Because it is rarely observed and restricted to a limited range, it remains one of the more elusive members of the Columbidae family, often studied more through historical specimens than direct field observation.
