Grant's Bluebill

Grant’s Bluebill, scientifically known as Spermophaga poliogenys, is a member of the estrildid finch family, characterized by its distinctive rounded wings and short tail. First described in the early twentieth century, this species is native to the dense, humid rainforests of Central Africa. Its taxonomy reflects the broader classification of the genus Spermophaga, birds prized by ornithologists for their heavy, deep-red bills and plumage patterns that often reveal subtle shifts in color across their restricted range.

The historical interest in the species centers on the 1908 expedition led by Claude Henry Baxter Grant, a naturalist and collector who gathered avian specimens across the Congo Basin. The species was named in his honor by the ornithologist William Ogilvie-Grant.
