Gray-crowned Palm-Tanager

The Gray-crowned Palm-Tanager, scientifically classified as Phaenicophilus poliocephalus, is a passerine bird endemic to the southern peninsula of Hispaniola. It evolved within the dense, humid broadleaf forests and shaded coffee plantations of the region, occupying a niche that reflects the complex biogeography of the island. Historically identified by ornithologists during the 19th century, it was long considered a subspecies of the Black-crowned Palm-Tanager before being recognized as a distinct species due to its specific cranial plumage and restricted geographic distribution.
