Gray-crowned Tetraka

The Gray-crowned Tetraka, scientifically classified as Xanthomixis cinereiceps, is a small passerine bird endemic to the humid evergreen forests of eastern Madagascar. First described in the late 19th century, it belongs to the Bernieridae family, a group of birds that evolved in relative isolation on the island. Its taxonomic history has been fluid, having been shifted between various families, including bulbuls and babblers, before molecular analysis solidified its placement within this unique Malagasy lineage.

The bird is characterized by its modest, cryptic plumage, featuring a slate-gray crown and olive-toned wings and back, which serves as effective camouflage within the dense forest understory. Its physical profile is defined by rounded wings that assist in short, agile flights through foliage and a distinctively notched tail. Observations of its behavior indicate a preference for skulking in low vegetation, which historically made the species difficult to document and led to it being considered rare or elusive by ornithologists for many decades.
