Gray-crowned Prinia

The Gray-crowned Prinia (Prinia cinereocapilla) is a passerine bird belonging to the Cisticolidae family, first described by the ornithologist Brian Houghton Hodgson in the mid-19th century. Primarily distributed across the sub-Himalayan regions of India and Nepal, the species occupies a specific ecological niche in tall, dense grassland and scrub habitats. Its identification has historically relied on distinguishing it from other closely related prinia species through its subtle plumage variations, specifically the slate-gray crown and its distinctively notched tail.

The design of the species, from a biological evolutionary perspective, reflects adaptation to life in dense undergrowth. The combination of a rounded wing shape and a notched tail allows for the agile, short-burst flight patterns required to navigate through thick grasses.
