Gray-headed Dove

The Gray-headed Dove, Leptotila plumbeiceps, is a species native to the neotropical forests of Central America, stretching from Mexico down to Colombia. Ornithologically, it belongs to a genus of doves noted for their terrestrial habits and relatively shy, reclusive behavior. Unlike many other members of the dove family that congregate in open areas, this species is defined by its preference for the dense understory of humid tropical forests, which has historically made it a challenging subject for early explorers and naturalists to document.

The species is distinguished by its namesake gray head, which contrasts with a vinaceous-brown breast and a square-tipped tail that reveals distinct white corners when in flight.
