Mrs. Hume's Pheasant

Mrs. Hume's Pheasant was formally described in 1881 by the ornithologist Allan Octavian Hume, who named the species after his wife, Mary Ann Hume. Native to the mountain forests of northeastern India, Myanmar, China, and Thailand, this bird is a member of the genus Syrmaticus. It is historically significant for its rarity and its status as a flagship species for conservation efforts within its fragmented Himalayan and Southeast Asian habitats.

The bird's visual profile is defined by its rounded wings and notably long, barred tail, which contribute to its striking appearance in the wild. Its scientific classification reflects the 19th-century tradition of naturalist exploration, where British colonial officials frequently identified and cataloged local wildlife during their tenure in the region.
