Green-bearded Helmetcrest

The Green-bearded Helmetcrest, Oxypogon guerinii, is a member of the hummingbird family endemic to the Eastern Andes of Colombia. It inhabits the high-altitude paramo ecosystems, specifically within the Bogota region, where it has evolved distinct physical characteristics such as its pointed wings and notched tail to navigate the cold, wind-swept environment. First described by the French naturalist Auguste Boissonneau in 1840, the species reflects the complex biodiversity of the South American high-altitude peaks.

The species is distinguished by its namesake facial plumage, which features long, stiff feathers extending from the throat and chin, creating a beard-like appearance. Taxonomically, the genus Oxypogon was historically treated as a single species, but modern studies have elevated its populations to distinct species based on subtle variations in crest color and facial patterns. Its design is a product of evolutionary adaptation to the frailejón plants upon which it relies for nectar, marking it as a specialized inhabitant of an increasingly fragile high-mountain habitat.
