Green-billed Coucal

The Green-billed Coucal, or Centropus chlororhynchos, is a member of the cuckoo family endemic to the dense, wet forests of southwestern Sri Lanka. First described by English ornithologist John Gould in 1837, the species was identified within the context of 19th-century colonial exploration and natural history cataloging. Its evolution resulted in a distinctive morphological profile characterized by broad, rounded wings and a significantly elongated tail, features that allow it to navigate the thick, tangled undergrowth of its limited rainforest habitat.

The species is noted for its secretive behavior and striking appearance, featuring a notable green-tinted bill that sets it apart from its closest relatives. The design of the bird reflects an adaptation to its environment, as the long tail serves as a stabilizer for movement through dense vegetation.
