Green-billed Malkoha

The Green-billed Malkoha, or Phaenicophaeus tristis, belongs to the cuckoo family and is native to the forests of South and Southeast Asia. It evolved as a non-parasitic species, characterized by its distinctive long, graduated tail and broad, rounded wings which facilitate a secretive, stealthy movement through dense forest canopies. Taxonomically, it was first described in the mid-18th century, representing a specialized lineage of birds that prioritize agile flight within wooded habitats over long-distance migration.

The bird's design is an elegant example of evolutionary adaptation for life in the mid-story of tropical forests. Its namesake green bill and the stark, bare skin around its eyes were shaped by selective pressures favoring camouflage and visual signaling in shaded light.
