Green-throated Tanager

The Green-throated Tanager (Stilpnia argyrofenges) is a species of passerine bird belonging to the Thraupidae family. Native to the humid montane forests of the eastern Andes in Peru and Bolivia, this species occupies a specific ecological niche in the subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It was formally described by the German ornithologist Hans von Berlepsch in 1903, reflecting the late 19th and early 20th-century period of intense biological cataloging of South American avian diversity.

Taxonomically, the species is distinguished by its rounded wing shape and distinctively notched tail, features that assist in its maneuverability within dense canopy vegetation. While it was previously categorized under the genus Tangara, phylogenetic studies have led to its current classification within Stilpnia. It remains a subject of study for ornithologists interested in the evolutionary radiation of tanagers, though it is often considered a shy and difficult-to-observe member of its genus due to its preference for high-altitude forest strata.
