Hawaiian Coot

The Hawaiian Coot, or 'alae keʻokeʻo, is a species of waterbird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It evolved as an isolated population of the American Coot, adapting specifically to the freshwater ponds, marshes, and coastal wetlands of the archipelago. As a non-migratory species, its morphology has shifted over time to suit its tropical habitat, characterized by its distinctive broad wings and short tail that aid in short-distance navigation across local waterways.

Culturally, the bird holds significance in Hawaiian tradition, often appearing in oral histories and folklore. From a biological perspective, the species is classified as endangered due to habitat loss and the introduction of invasive predators.
