Hawaiian Crow

The Hawaiian Crow, known locally as the 'Alalā, is an endemic species from the island of Hawai'i that evolved in relative isolation. It is characterized by its broad wings and rounded tail, physical traits that historically allowed it to navigate the dense, high-canopy forests of the island. For centuries, the species held a significant place in Hawaiian culture, often appearing in traditional chants and folklore as an 'aumakua, or ancestral guardian spirit, reflecting the deep ecological and spiritual connection between the bird and the archipelago’s human inhabitants.
