White-winged Magpie

The White-winged Magpie, scientifically known as Urocissa whiteheadi, was first formally described by ornithologist William Robert Ogilvie-Grant in 1899. It was named in honor of the British explorer and collector John Whitehead, who conducted significant biological surveys in the mountains of Hainan, China, during the late 19th century. As a member of the Corvidae family, this species occupies a distinct niche in the montane forests of its native range, characterized by its striking black and white plumage and elongated tail feathers.

The bird's design reflects its adaptation to dense forest environments, featuring broad wings that facilitate maneuverability within forest canopies and a signature long, graduated tail for balance and stabilization during flight. Unlike its more vibrant relatives in the Urocissa genus, the White-winged Magpie is noted for a more monochromatic, understated aesthetic.
