Inca Dove

The Inca dove, or Columbina inca, is a small, ground-dwelling bird native to the southwestern United States, Mexico, and parts of Central America. Unlike many migratory species, it has expanded its range significantly over the last century, thriving in human-modified landscapes such as suburban gardens and parks. Its design is characterized by a distinctive, scaled appearance across its feathers and a long, pointed tail that differentiates it from the common mourning dove, contributing to its evolutionary success in semi-arid environments.

Ornithologically, the species was first described by René Primevère Lesson in 1847. Its common name is something of a geographical misnomer, as the bird does not actually inhabit the historical range of the Inca Empire. Instead, the name was assigned during an era of exploration when many species were misattributed to South American regions. The bird is noted for its high-pitched, repetitive call, which serves as a consistent identifier for observers and researchers studying its social behavior and territorial displays.
