Indian Spotted Eagle

The Indian spotted eagle, scientifically classified as Clanga hastata, is a large bird of prey native to South Asia. It was historically considered a subspecies of the lesser spotted eagle, but genetic studies and distinct morphological traits led researchers to recognize it as a separate, full species in the early 21st century. It is primarily found in the Gangetic plains of India, where it inhabits forest edges, wetlands, and open areas suitable for hunting its preferred prey, such as rodents and small birds.

The species is distinguished by its characteristic silhouette, featuring broad, rounded wings and a distinctively wedge-shaped tail. These physical adaptations are suited for its specific style of soaring and hunting within its savanna and agricultural landscape. It is currently categorized as vulnerable by international conservation bodies, largely due to habitat fragmentation and the ongoing loss of the mature trees required for its nesting sites across its limited range.
