Indian Thick-knee

The Indian thick-knee (Burhinus indicus) is a widespread species within the family Burhinidae, primarily inhabiting the open plains, riverbanks, and dry forest scrublands of South Asia. It evolved as a crepuscular and nocturnal predator, characterized by its large, golden eyes that facilitate hunting insects, small reptiles, and crustaceans in low-light conditions. Taxonomic history distinguishes it from its close relative, the Eurasian thick-knee, through subtle variations in plumage and its specific vocalizations, which are often heard during the dusk hours across the Indian subcontinent.
