Jameson's Snipe

Jameson's Snipe, taxonomically classified as Gallinago jamesoni, is an elusive bird species endemic to the high-altitude paramo ecosystems of the Andes, ranging from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to Peru. It was first described by the ornithologist Louis Fraser in 1855 and named in honor of William Jameson, a Scottish botanist and explorer who lived in Quito. As a member of the Scolopacidae family, its evolutionary path is defined by a reliance on high-elevation wetlands, making it a critical indicator species for the health of these unique alpine environments.

The bird’s physiology is a masterclass in functional adaptation, characterized by its narrow wing shape and distinctively pointed tail, which facilitate rapid, agile flight patterns suited to its misty, mountainous habitat.
