Javan Blue-banded Kingfisher

The Javan Blue-banded Kingfisher, Alcedo euryzona, is an elusive riverine bird endemic to the island of Java, Indonesia. First formally described in the early 19th century, it was historically categorized within a wider complex of blue-banded kingfishers before phylogenetic studies confirmed its status as a distinct species. It evolved to occupy dense, shaded primary forests near clear, fast-flowing streams, a habitat that has made it one of the most difficult avian species to observe or document in the wild.

The bird’s design—characterized by a striking cerulean back, a dark breast band, and a compact frame with rounded wings and a short, stout tail—is an adaptation for high-speed maneuvering through cluttered riparian undergrowth. Because of its extreme rarity and the rapid degradation of its specialized jungle habitat, the species has been the focus of intense conservation concern. It is widely considered a 'holy grail' for birders and ornithologists, with little historical photographic record existing until modern expeditions sought to capture evidence of its survival in remnant forest patches.
