Where it came from

The Kauai Oo, or Moho braccatus, was an endemic honeyeater of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. It was formally described in 1860 by John Cassin, though it had long been known to native Hawaiians, who prized its yellow auxiliary feathers for use in royal ceremonial cloaks and capes. These garments were symbols of the highest status and power, crafted through a meticulous process of gathering feathers from birds that were typically released unharmed, a testament to the cultural reverence for the species.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the species faced severe decline due to a combination of habitat loss, introduced predators such as rats and feral pigs, and the introduction of avian malaria via mosquitoes. The bird became the subject of intense ornithological interest as it grew increasingly rare. Despite conservation efforts, the population plummeted, and the last known individual, a singing male, was recorded in 1987 before the species was declared extinct.
