Knysna Turaco

The Knysna Turaco, Tauraco corythaix, is a species of turaco native to the temperate forests of South Africa. It was first formally described by Johann Georg Wagler in 1827. In the context of natural history, these birds became subjects of significant interest to 19th-century ornithologists and artists, who were captivated by their striking iridescent green plumage and the unique presence of turacin, a copper-based pigment that gives their wing feathers a vivid crimson hue.

The aesthetic appeal of the species, characterized by its long tail and rounded wings, made it a frequent subject for color plate illustrations in classic ornithological volumes. These depictions were intended to document the biodiversity of the Afrotropical realm for European audiences, often emphasizing the bird's distinctive white eye-ring and prominent crest.
