Labrador Duck

The Labrador Duck, Camptorhynchus labradorius, remains one of the most enigmatic figures in North American ornithology. Likely nesting along the coast of Labrador and wintering as far south as the Chesapeake Bay, the species was already noted as rare by early nineteenth-century naturalists. It was never a widely hunted bird, nor was it considered a primary food source, yet it occupies a somber place in history as the first endemic North American bird species to go extinct following European settlement.

The decline of the Labrador Duck is attributed to a combination of environmental pressures rather than a single event. Over-harvesting of their eggs, the depletion of their primary food source—mussels and small mollusks—by human coastal expansion, and competition for breeding grounds likely accelerated their disappearance. The last confirmed specimen was recorded in 1875. Today, fewer than 60 taxidermy specimens survive in global museum collections, serving as silent witnesses to the fragility of avian populations during the industrial expansion of the 1800s.
