Lesser Coucal

The Lesser Coucal, scientifically classified as Centropus bengalensis, is a member of the cuckoo family native to the grasslands and scrublands of South and Southeast Asia. Unlike many of its brood-parasitic relatives, this species is noted for raising its own young, typically constructing nests within dense, low-lying vegetation. Its evolution has favored a distinct morphology, characterized by broad wings adapted for short-distance flight and a notably long, graduated tail that aids in maneuvering through the thick, tangled stalks of its preferred habitats.

The species was first formally described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788. Naturalists of the 18th and 19th centuries identified the bird as a key indicator species for open, humid ecosystems, often documenting its elusive behavior in the field. The design of the bird reflects a specialized adaptation to its environment, where the broad wings facilitate rapid escapes from predators, while the long tail serves as a counterbalance during the bird's frequent, ground-dwelling foraging excursions.
