Lesser Green Leafbird

The Lesser Green Leafbird, Chloropsis cyanopogon, is a passerine bird native to the evergreen forests of Southeast Asia, ranging from the Malay Peninsula to Borneo and Sumatra. It belongs to the family Chloropseidae, a group characterized by their vibrant plumage and nectar-feeding habits. Unlike many of its cousins, this species is noted for its relatively smaller size and more subdued, uniform green coloration, which serves as an effective camouflage within the dense foliage of the rainforest canopy.

First formally described by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1877, the bird was classified based on specimens collected in the Malay Peninsula. Its distinct morphological features—specifically its short, rounded wings and sharply pointed tail—reflect an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through thick tropical vegetation rather than long-distance migration. It is primarily observed in small groups or pairs, often foraging for insects and fruit in the upper strata of trees, which has made it a subject of interest for field ornithologists documenting the biodiversity of the Sundaic region.
