Where it came from

The long-tailed jaeger, or Stercorarius longicaudus, is a circumpolar seabird that breeds primarily in the high Arctic tundra. It is the smallest of the three jaeger species and is distinguished by the elongated, ribbon-like central tail feathers that develop in breeding adults, often reaching lengths nearly equal to the rest of the bird's body.

First formally described by ornithologist Louis Vieillot in 1819, the species evolved to occupy a specialized niche as a kleptoparasite, frequently stealing food from other seabirds, though it notably relies heavily on lemmings during its Arctic breeding season. Its streamlined, pointed wing structure facilitates the agile, falcon-like flight necessary for both its pursuit of prey and its long-distance migration to the Southern Oceans.
