Malabar Whistling-Thrush

The Malabar Whistling-Thrush, Myophonus horsfieldii, is an endemic resident of the Western Ghats of India. Identified by its striking dark plumage with iridescent blue patches, the species was historically documented by naturalists during the 19th century as they cataloged the biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent. It is often referred to as the 'whistling schoolboy' due to its characteristic, human-like, melodic whistling calls that are frequently heard at dawn and dusk near forested streams and rocky ravines.

The bird's physical morphology, characterized by rounded wings and a distinctively long tail, is an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through the dense, humid undergrowth of its mountainous habitat. It was formally described by ornithologist Nicholas Aylward Vigors in 1829. Within the context of avian collections, it remains a study of adaptation to the unique microclimates of the Deccan Plateau, valued by researchers for its complex vocalizations and territorial behaviors.
