Where it came from

The Malagasy kestrel, Falco newtoni, is a small bird of prey endemic to Madagascar and the Aldabra islands. It was formally described by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1871, named in honor of the British zoologist Alfred Newton. As a member of the diverse genus Falco, it evolved to thrive in a wide variety of habitats across its island range, including forests, grasslands, and even modified agricultural landscapes.

The physical design of the kestrel is finely tuned for its life as a predator. Its pointed wings allow for efficient, high-speed flight, while its notched tail aids in maneuverability, enabling it to hover effectively when hunting insects and small vertebrates. Unlike many raptors that require dense wilderness, this species has successfully adapted to human-altered environments, reflecting a resilient evolutionary strategy that has kept it common throughout its range.
