Mato Grosso Antbird

The Mato Grosso Antbird, Cercomacra melanaria, is a species native to the dense thickets and vine tangles of the Pantanal and surrounding regions in South America. Identified as part of the family Thamnophilidae, this bird evolved within the unique flood-plain ecosystems of the Mato Grosso region. It was formally described by the French naturalist Émile Oustalet in 1892, fitting into the mid-19th-century scientific movement focused on cataloging the distinct avian biodiversity of the Neotropics.

The physical morphology of the species, including its rounded wings and distinctively notched tail, reflects an evolutionary adaptation to life in dense undergrowth.
