Where it came from

The Pale-faced Bare-eye (Phlegopsis borbae) is a specialized passerine bird endemic to the Amazon basin in Brazil. It was first described by the Austrian ornithologist Carl Eduard Hellmayr in 1907. As a member of the antbird family, this species evolved to thrive in the complex understory of terra firme forests, displaying a highly specific ecological reliance on army ant swarms to flush out prey, a behavior common among the Thamnophilidae family.

The bird’s design reflects a distinct evolutionary adaptation to the deep shade of the rainforest. Characterized by its rounded wings, which allow for maneuverability in dense vegetation, and a notched tail, the species is physically distinguished by the striking, unfeathered red skin around its eyes. This feature, known as the bare eye-ring, serves as a vivid contrast to its somber plumage and is a hallmark of the genus Phlegopsis.
