Where it came from

The Mindanao Heleia, also known as Goodfellow's White-eye, was first described by Ernst Hartert in 1903. Named in honor of the British bird collector Walter Goodfellow, who was active in the Philippines during the early 20th century, the species is endemic to the island of Mindanao. Its discovery occurred during a period of intense ornithological exploration in the region, aimed at cataloging the unique biodiversity of the Philippine archipelago for European natural history museums.

The bird is characterized by its distinct, rounded wings and rounded tail, features that are well-adapted to its life in the dense, high-altitude mossy forests. Unlike many of its relatives in the Zosteropidae family, it maintains a more sedentary lifestyle within its mountainous habitat. While it has been historically difficult to observe, conservation efforts have focused on the protection of the old-growth forests of Mount Apo and surrounding peaks, which serve as the primary refuge for this elusive avian species.
