Kikuyu White-eye

The Kikuyu White-eye, Zosterops kikuyuensis, is a small passerine bird endemic to the highland forests of central Kenya. It evolved within the isolated afromontane ecosystems of the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya, where it thrives in the dense canopy and scrubby forest edges. Ornithologically, it is distinguished from the widespread African Yellow White-eye by its olive-green plumage, bright yellow throat, and the signature white ring of feathers around the eye that gives the species its name.

First described in the early 20th century, the species is considered a stable member of the Zosteropidae family within its restricted range. Its rounded wings and tail are anatomical adaptations for maneuverability, allowing the bird to forage effectively through dense foliage for insects and nectar. While it remains a subject of study for ornithologists interested in montane speciation, the bird is not a product of human design but a resilient inhabitant of the East African highlands, well-regarded by field researchers for its social, active nature.
