Mountain Black-eye

The Mountain Black-eye, or Zosterops emiliae, is a distinct species of bird endemic to the montane forests of Borneo. It was first described in the late 19th century by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe, who identified the specimen based on its unique physical characteristics, most notably the prominent white ring around its eye which gives the species its common name. This bird thrives in high-altitude environments, typically residing in the mossy forests of the island's central mountain ranges.

The bird is characterized by its rounded wings and rounded tail, features that reflect its evolution for agile movement through dense, high-elevation foliage. Ornithologists and bird enthusiasts value the species for its elusive nature and specific ecological requirements, which keep it restricted to remote, undisturbed habitats. While it is not a subject of human design, its taxonomic history serves as a window into the extensive biodiversity surveys conducted in Southeast Asia during the colonial era and the ongoing efforts to document island-specific fauna.
