Mouse-colored Thistletail

The Mouse-colored Thistletail, Asthenes griseomurina, was formally described by the ornithologist Frank Chapman in 1923. It belongs to the Furnariidae family, a group of birds known as ovenbirds, which are widespread across Central and South America. This species is native to the high-altitude, humid forests of the Andes in southern Ecuador and northern Peru, an ecosystem defined by dense vegetation and rugged terrain.

The bird’s common name refers to its distinct plumage and tail morphology, specifically its notched tail feathers, which serve as a specialized adaptation for navigating tangled undergrowth. Its rounded wing shape suggests a lifestyle focused on short-distance, agile flights within the canopy rather than long-distance migration. While it is not a subject of human design, its evolutionary development reflects a highly specific ecological niche, remaining relatively elusive to researchers due to the remote, cloud-shrouded nature of its Andean habitat.
