Moustached Kingfisher

The Moustached Kingfisher, Actenoides bougainvillei, is a rare forest kingfisher endemic to the island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. First described by the French naturalist Oustalet in 1883, the bird remained largely elusive to the scientific community for over a century, with very few confirmed sightings or specimens. Its habitat in the humid montane forests of the island has made it notoriously difficult to study, leading to its classification as a vulnerable species and a subject of intense interest among ornithologists and bird conservationists.

The species is characterized by its distinct physical traits, including broad wings and a rounded tail, which are adaptations to its dense, forested environment. The male is particularly noted for the bold, mustache-like streak of turquoise malar feathers from which it derives its common name. Because the species was essentially rediscovered in the wild only recently, research remains limited to its morphology and habitat preferences, reflecting the broader challenges of documenting and protecting avian biodiversity in remote Pacific island ecosystems.
