Where it came from

The Painted Tiger-Parrot, Psittacella picta, was first described by the British zoologist James Graham Goodson in 1914. It is endemic to the high-altitude montane forests of the central mountain ranges in New Guinea, where it occupies a specialized ecological niche. Like other members of the genus Psittacella, its evolutionary history is closely tied to the isolation of these alpine cloud forests, resulting in a distinct, cryptic plumage that helps the bird blend into the dense, mossy understory.

The bird's design is characterized by a subtle, barred pattern across the back that resembles the markings of a tiger, which serves as a form of camouflage against the mottled light of its environment. Featuring rounded wings adapted for maneuvering through thick vegetation and a distinctively pointed, graduated tail, the species exhibits a morphology typical of ground-dwelling parrots. It is rarely observed in the wild due to its shy nature and preference for secluded, high-altitude habitats.
