Noronha Elaenia

The Noronha Elaenia, or Elaenia ridleyana, is a small passerine bird endemic to the oceanic island of Fernando de Noronha off the coast of Brazil. It was first described by the naturalist Henry Nicholas Ridley during the 1887 Challenger expedition, an endeavor that significantly expanded biological understanding of the South Atlantic islands. The bird occupies a restricted range within the island's scrubland and forest patches, standing as a primary example of the unique evolutionary isolation found in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago.

Taxonomically, the species is distinguished by its broad wing shape and notched tail, features that have adapted to its specific environment and foraging behavior. It is closely related to other members of the Elaenia genus found on the South American mainland but has evolved distinct vocalizations and plumage characteristics. Ornithologists often study the species to better understand the mechanisms of island speciation and the challenges faced by endemic birds in habitats influenced by human settlement and invasive flora.
